With its fragrant lavender fields, stunning beaches, mountainous hinterland, and fascinating art treasures, Hvar is truly a jewel in Croatia's island landscape.

The island boasts a long and rich history, dating back to the 4th century BC when the Greeks founded the colony of Pharos, now known as Stari Grad, and the settlement of Dimos, now the town of Hvar. Over the centuries, the island saw various rulers, from the Romans to Croatian kings, before becoming part of Venice from 1278 to 1797. In the 15th century, fortifications were built, and Hvar became the island's capital, recognized as a resort as early as 1886 under Austro-Hungarian rule. The well-preserved Renaissance-style old town has long been a favorite among Croatian artists and celebrities, reflected in its stylish restaurants, chic bars, and luxurious hotels. The harbor of Hvar, once one of the most important ports on the Oriental route, is now home to numerous glamorous luxury yachts, making it one of the most splendid in the Adriatic. The town's history as a bishop's seat has left it with many monasteries, including the Benedictine Monastery, where nuns still craft and sell traditional Hvar lace. Notable sights include the Franciscan Monastery, founded in 1461, and the Church of Our Lady outside the old town walls. The Renaissance Cathedral of St. Stephen, located on the main square, houses fascinating artworks and a collection of relics and silverware.

The town of Stari Grad lies along a long bay, and a walk through its narrow streets lined with traditional stone houses leads to the town's landmark, the Church of St. Stephen, with its freestanding Venetian-style bell tower. Another attraction is the Tvrdalj Castle, the fortified estate of the humanist Renaissance poet and philosopher Petar Hektorović. Built in 1514, it served as a luxurious private residence and a refuge for the population from pirate attacks. East of Stari Grad lies the fertile Ager Plain, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008. Here, archaeological finds have confirmed that olives, wine, and figs were cultivated by the island's first Greek inhabitants in much the same way as today.

Hvar also offers breathtaking natural beauty, which can be explored on hikes in the mountains or bike rides along the coast—not just in the summer months. The island's mild, healing climate makes it a popular destination for wellness tourists even in winter. The Mediterranean climate, with approximately 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, pleasant water temperatures from June to October, and the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Adriatic, make Hvar an attractive location for your dream property. Exceptionally clean and beautiful beaches and bays, such as the popular sandy bay of Palmizana, as well as small, secluded coves, invite you to relax, sunbathe, and swim. The pleasant summer wind, the Maestral, is ideal for sailors and windsurfers, while divers will find Hvar a paradise thanks to its rich underwater biodiversity and numerous dive sites.
