The area around Omis has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of several small settlements from the Roman period. In the late Middle Ages, Omis became a stronghold for the notorious Neretva pirates, who from the 12th century onwards significantly disrupted and endangered Venetian maritime trade. These pirates dominated the seas from Omis to Dubrovnik, attacking merchant ships or demanding passage fees for safe travel. It wasn't until 1444 that Venice succeeded in capturing the town and putting an end to the piracy when the Serenissima took control, a rule that lasted until the end of the Venetian Republic. The city's current Dalmatian-Venetian architectural character dates back to this era. In the picturesque old town, with its narrow winding streets, one can explore Venetian buildings, medieval stone houses, and remnants of the historic city walls. From the well-known Fortica fortress at the summit of Mount Dinara, there is a breathtaking view of the town, the emerald-green Cetina River, and the turquoise Adriatic Sea, extending to the islands of Brac, Hvar, and Solta.
