The town is a long hillside settlement and stretches along the base of Mount Ucka. At the centre lies Slatina beach, a concrete lido, where cafes and souvenir stalls attract Opatia´s visitors and invite them for having a soft drink or looking for special gifts. Until 1844 Opatija was a small fishing village, but in 1882 Friedrich Schüller, head of Austria´s Southern Railway, bought the Villa Angiolina and made Opatija a holiday destination after he had built the line from Ljubljana to Rijeka. From this time on lots of grand hotels followed and the seaside resort got its Europe -wide reputation and members of nobility like Franz Josef of Austria and other celebrities like the famous write and playwright Anton Chekov spent their holidays here and enjoyed the mild climate.
